Match Report and Team Details – Week commencing Monday 12th October
Wednesday 14th October
Woking U19 (EDS) 3 – 2 Dagenham & Redbridge U19: National League Academy – South Division
MTPC, Woking College, Rydens Way
After last week’s victory 6 – 1 at Maidstone United, this was a much closer affair, but one which maintained Woking’s position at the top of the league.
Woking started well, after three minutes they took the lead, some neat footwork from Jack Samuels before he passed the ball forwards to Jalil Page who controlled, turned, and passed inside to Jack Tricker who found space and deceived the ‘keeper with a shot curling gently into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.
However, the Cards were soon reminded that maintaining one’s levels is essential at all times, and within two minutes they were behind. The first Dagger to their heart came from a corner that was headed in after it had bounced in the six-yard box. The second the result of a mishit back pass which was seized on and dispatched past Aaron Sings before he could cover the situation.
Woking were stirred into a response, coming close when a Louie Taylor-Boyle pass across the area eluded Page. The equaliser came on 15 minutes, Will Ledbury battling well to win the ball and playing an astute pass to Taylor-Boyle, still pushed forward from full back, whose run across the defender was ended illegally. Tricker gave the ‘keeper no chance from the penalty spot, even though he dived the right way the ball was too accurately and powerfully placed in his bottom left corner.
The game now settled into a well-fought pattern. Both sides sought to create chances, but without an end result, Sings secure when called upon. Ed Scott was forced into one block for a corner, which had him enquiring of his teammates as to how the need had arisen, but the deadlock was set.
Half-time: Woking 2 – 2 Dagenham & Redbridge
Woking made a change at the break, Joe Frawley coming on at left full back and Jack Samuels moving into central midfield. On 52 minutes Woking scored what would prove to be the winner, Taylor-Boyle won the ball and his great long pass released Jalil Page on the right wing and his pinpoint first time cross was met six yards out by Nick Alves who skilfully cushioned his finish into the top corner.
Again, the game settled, and there were few goal chances, Scott and Dillan Davies coming closest getting on the end of set pieces, until a Tricker shot went narrowly wide on 73 minutes.
Good passing from Ledbury, Timothy Francis and Seyi Akinwalere kept Woking in the search for a fourth, but Dagenham also sought their equaliser, and Sings’ sound handling calmed some nervous defending.
With the game in added time a strong run from Akinwalere further released the pressure, and some diligent work from Davies helped see out the victory.
Woking now visit second placed Eastleigh, in what should be their sternest test yet.
Woking: Aaron Sings, Louie Taylor-Boyle, Ed Scott ©, Dillan Davies, Jack Samuels; George Mattingley (Joe Frawley 46), Will Ledbury; Timothy Frances, Jack Tricker, Nick Alves (Seyi Akinwalere 67), Jalil Page (Minkah Okojie 73). Unused substitute: Dom West (GK).
Goals: Tricker 3, 15 pen, Alves 52.
Woking U18 5 – 5 Hayes & Yeading United U18: Hayes win 4 – 2 on penalties: FA Youth Cup – Third Round of Qualifying
The Laithwaite Community Stadium, Kingfield Road
A classic FA Cup tie, in front of a crowd of 290 – double the attendance for the First Team’s game in the National League Cup the previous evening.
As the scoreline suggests, there were chances for both sides throughout, in a game that Woking came very close to winning.
The drama unfolded from the first minute, penalty appeals for a challenge on Jaden Mansour dismissed by the officials.
On four minutes Will Richards had a shot blocked, before Hayes counterattack from the resulting corner called upon Max Thomas for some excellent cover work.
An astute pass from Arthur Pereira played in Mansour to win a corner, but play soon switched to the other end, and Woking could consider themselves fortunate that a defensive challenge did not concede a penalty.
Woking came close to opening the scoring on 14 minutes, another quality pass from Pereira just running away from Richards. Then Daejharn Wells played in Richards, but the rebound from the save from his cross shot eluded Joe Callow.
Not for the first time, Casper Hammond’s tackling and passing set Woking on the attack, and his cross, after a one-two with Thomas, found Richards on the far side of the area, but his first time shot was wide of the target.
Hayes responded and had the lead on 22 minutes. Hammond conceding a free kick on the byline, which was headed home by Jack Hogg at the far post.
Woking went back on the attack, Richards and Mansour creating chances for each other, but without success.
There was relief for Woking after a challenge in their penalty area saw the referee rather unclearly indicate a goal kick, rather than a penalty, before play once again moved to the other end. Richards set up Mansour and his well struck shot forced a save from Harry Slade in the Hayes’ goal.
The 40th minute brought Woking’s equaliser, Richards picking the ball up on the halfway line and playing a diagonal ball forward to Mansour on the left side, who cut inside and shot from the edge of the area and in off the left post. Hayes’ response saw Joshua Allan save well with his legs from a Joseph Orimoloye shot.
Added time brought a second goal for the Cards, Richards passing wide to Mansour whose chipped pass to the far post was cushioned down by Thomas for Callow, the Woking striker getting a touch to knock the ball over the line as Slade and Corey Thrower closed in to challenge. Their collision saw both Slade and Thrower hurt badly enough not to continue, but both were able to walk reasonably comfortably by the end of the evening.
Half-time: Woking 2 – 1 Hayes & Yeading United
Hayes were quickly off the mark in the second half, equalising on 48 minutes, Allan did well to save a shot from the edge of the area, but was powerless to stop Jude Sitwell firing home the rebound.
Woking responded, winning a corner when a Mansour shot was blocked. Richards took it from the right and it looked to have been headed home just inside the post, but neither the referee nor his assistant were satisfied that it had crossed the line before the outfield player now having to play in goal could scoop it away.
The Woking offensive continued, the stand-in ‘keeper saving well from Richards, Callow and Mansour, with Pereira, Luke Manly and Thomas also coming close, but the next twist in the plot was in Hayes’ favour.
Having already broken dangerously once, only to be ruled offside, on 67 minutes they had the lead. Bartek Wojatszewski gratefully accepting the referee’s decision to give a spot kick and confidently sending Allan the wrong way.
Substitutes Alfie Moult and Kai Russell entered the fray on 68 minutes to boost the Cards, and within 15 minutes what looked like a decisive turnaround had swung the game Woking’s way.
Richards and Callow saw their efforts saved or blocked, but on 74 minutes Russell had the equaliser. Woking built up well from the back and when the ‘keeper parried Wells cross Russell returned it low and hard, giving the custodian and covering defenders no chance of effecting a block.
Hayes nearly retook the lead, Manly doing well to clear off the line, before Woking had the lead on 77 minutes. Wells read the bounce on the ‘keeper’s clearance and headed the ball down to Russell who turned, set himself, and hit a fantastic driven lob over the ‘keeper from 45 yards.
Four minutes later Woking looked to have clinched victory, Richards took a free kick short to Callow whose fine left-footed strike was fired across the ’keeper and into the bottom corner from over 30 yards. But there was a lot more drama to come.
An overspill of emotions which saw several players in very heated discussions was calmed by the referee with a caution for a player from each side, but the real concern was that he had missed a more serious offence by the Hayes’ player.
Woking were unsuccessful with two further attacks, but with the game entering what was understood to be a minimum of five minutes added time it looked like they had done enough.
Hayes halved their deficit on 90+2 minutes, Orimoloye finding the bottom corner with a free kick from nearly thirty yards out. Woking were now under pressure, Moult with two very good attack-stopping challenges.
As we entered the eighth minute of added time and Allan punched clear a Hayes’ corner it looked like time was up, but the referee continued and another free kick floated into Woking’s area was headed over the defender on the line and in by Matthew Field, Hayes building on their reputation for last minute heroics.
The penalty shoot-out got away from Woking all too quickly. Hayes successful with four good penalties and although Russell and Callow scored Woking’s first two; one saved and one put over the bar saw Woking go out, and Hayes and Yeading United through to the First Round Proper, where they will host Kingstonian.
Woking: Joshua Allan, Casper Hammond (Alfie Moult 68), Luke Manly ©, Byron O’Donnell, Daejharn Wells (Sonnie Leedham 88); Harvey Johnson (Ben Bailey 88), Arthur Pereira (Kai Russell 68); Max Thomas (Harry Munden 90+1), Will Richards, Jaden Mansour, Joe Callow. Unused substitutes: Harry MacFadyen (GK), Luca Chevallier.
Goals: Mansour 40, Callow 45+2, 81, Russell 74, 77.
Referee: Jack Roper.
Thursday 15th October
Woking U17 2 – 2 Ascot United: Isthmian Youth League – West Division
Knaphill FC, Redding Way
A less straightforward game for those who had played in last week’s Allied Counties game at Balham, with Ascot a more stubborn opponent.
The work of Woking’s defence was creditable in the opening exchanges, with Hugo Shaw also called into action, making two solid saves and then narrowing the angle well when Theo Parrott was through on goal.
Woking were passing the ball well throughout the team, and Jerome Musi had threatened the Ascot goal, but it wasn’t until the 37th minute that they were close to hitting the target, Oliver Kumbaro’s cross shot striking the top of the crossbar.
The Cards closed the half strongly, Musi’s pass nearly putting in George Ellis, Keegan Berry’s pass enabling Ellis to get a shot away, and Musi also striking goalwards, but the goal wasn’t to come before the break.
Half-time: Woking 0 – 0 Ascot United
Woking went ahead on 49 minutes through a good passing move which led to Musi setting Kumbaro, who allowed the ball to run across him before hitting his shot to the bottom corner from 15 yards hard enough for it to beat Rhys McKnight getting a hand on it.
Although Ascot did press forward, Woking doubled their lead on 54 minutes. Harrison Hunt played the ball wide to Kumbaro and his pass into the area found Ben Golding, who neatly guided his shot into the top corner from 12 yards.
However, the tide was about to change, and two minutes later Woking conceded a penalty, although Shaw saved it well, diving to his bottom left corner. But this was a short reprieve, a goal coming on 58 minutes when a lofted cross was knocked in at the far post by Josh Jarvis, making the most of defensive hesitation.
Woking went back on the offensive, but Ascot defended well as Musi and then Hunt threatened, and the visitors were soon in search of their equaliser. Julien Malta-Bey’s free kick was deflected wide off the wall, and then Shaw came out on top in a one-on-one with Jack Burton who had seized on an under hit back pass but did not get enough elevation on his attempted chip over the ‘keeper.
With five minutes to go Shaw punched clear a free kick and Theo Hornbuckle defended solidly on the edge of his penalty area, but Ascot’s leveller came on 86 minutes. Fletcher Knight arrowing a free kick from over 25 yards towards the top corner and in off the underside of the bar.
The action in added time unfortunately featured Jordan Okusanga, who was cautioned twice within two minutes and consequently dismissed.
Woking in no doubt now as to the challenges of the Isthmian League.
Woking: Hugo Shaw, Harrison Hunt (Jordan Okusanga 64), Zane Taylor ©, Leighton Spence, Sad Kaloga (Harvey Grace 76); Keegan Berry (Harley Adams 46), Ben Golding (Theo Hornbuckle 76); George Ellis, Oliver Kumbaro, Henry Loxton, Jerome Musi. Unused substitute: Lucas Montague (GK).
Goals: Kumbaro 49, Golding 54.
