Match Reports and Team Details – Week commencing Monday 19th October

Wednesday 21st October

Woking U18 1 – 3 Chatham Town: National Academy Alliance League Cup – First Round

MTPC, Woking College, Rydens Way

On another bad day for notebooks, either paper or electronic, Woking found themselves unable to recover from going 0 – 3 behind after 17 minutes.

Bailey Streatfield had already had one shot go over the crossbar for the visitors when Evan Anyoaha gave them the lead on four minutes, heading home a corner at the far post.

Woking responded well, coming close when George Loader and Daejharn Wells combined to pick out a cross-field, overlapping run from Casper Hammond, who cut back inside onto his right foot and curled a well struck shot towards the far bottom corner, only for George Ray to prove equal to it, diving low to his left to palm it to safety.

Loader looked to have a chance as well, after good passing from Jordan Okusanya, Harvey Johnson and Hammond, but in lifting the ball over the advancing keeper he also cleared the crossbar.

Callum Collins then had to tip over his crossbar well from a Brandon Morgan shot, but Woking would soon be rueing their missed chances. Chatham doubled their lead on 15 minutes, Lync Henry punishing Wells’ injudicious trip with a well taken penalty which sent Collins to his right and the ball to the opposite corner.

The third, two minutes later, was something of a gift, Woking failing to clear their lines, Henry and Anyoaha playing a neat one-two and Collins with no chance of making a save when a deflection on Henry’s shot left him horribly wrong footed.

The duel between Morgan and Collins continued a minute later, a fine curling shot to the top corner brilliantly tipped onto the bar.

All was not lost for Woking, Harry Munden and Nat Flemming setting up Loader, but he was twice thwarted, first by a defensive block and then by the keeper’s save of his shot from the ricochet.

Flemming and Munden also saw chances go wide, whilst a great through pass from Flemming put Wells through on goal, but the angle was narrowing and Ray able to save Wells’ shot at his near post.

With the half coming to a close Morgan finally thought he had Collins beaten, but his exquisite chip only struck the crossbar. With Jack Kelly and Alfie Moult both defending stoutly the break came as a relief for an under-pressure Cards.

Half-time: Woking 0 – 3 Chatham Town

Woking regrouped well and reduced their arrears on 50 minutes. Hammond’s header won the ball from a clearance and guided it to Moult, moving inside from the right and playing a skilful one-two with Loader before shooting across the advancing keeper and into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

Having lost Byron O’Donnell as a precaution, following an accidental knock to the head, at the end of the first half, Woking reorganised with further substitutions and Ben Golding, coming into central midfield, played a defence-splitting pass to Moult on 65 minutes, but his shot from the edge of the area was wide.

A further change was required when a knock to Loader’s ankle was painful enough for him to leave the field, and his replacement Zack McColl-Eljanfali was soon into the action, the keeper doing well to block his shot from a Wells’ pass.

Woking’s best chance to really get back into the game came on 75 minutes when Wells’ cross was spilled by the keeper, but Johnson couldn’t keep his shot on target.

Chatham then kept chances to a minimum, Woking falling foul of their offside trap a number of times, as the visitors maintained their advantage, a Golding effort wide of the target the closest Woking would now come before added time.

Moult did force Ray into one more, good save before time was up, but Chatham had reaped the reward of their fast start and were deserving winners.

Woking: Callum Collins, Casper Hammond, Jack Kelly (Ben Golding 55), Byron O’Donnell (Luke Manly 43), Daejharn Wells; Jordan Okusanya, Harvey Johnson ©; Alfie Moult, Nat Flemming, Harry Munden (Max Thomas 61), George Loader (Zack McColl-Eljanfali 70). Unused substitute: Harry MacFadyen (GK).

Goal: Moult 50.

Eastleigh U19 (EDS) 2 – 2 Woking U19 (EDS): National League Academy – South Division

Ganger Farm Sports Park, Romsey

The top two sides in the division could not be separated, so Woking continue in first position.

Woking opened the scoring on 14 minutes, the first chance created by an incisive Will Richards’ pass to Nick Alves who saw his shot saved before Jalil Page battled for the chance to shoot, with the keeper’s parry falling to Jack Tricker whose awareness and movement meant he was on hand to tap home the rebound.

The Cards doubled their lead on 30 minutes, a move started by a Tricker pass from central midfield to Page on the right whose cross set up Richards to shoot with the parry falling to Tricker, following up the play, for him to knock in his second – a rather prolific goalscoring return from injury following his two goals last week.

Whilst Woking had further chances, the Eastleigh keeper kept his side in the game and ensured they went to the half-time break just the two goals down.

Eastleigh built on this platform and were back in the game with their first goal on 52 minutes, a quick break finding Jack Topley in space on the far post.

A good Sings save then delayed the return to parity of score, but the impetus was with the hosts and they equalised on 67 minutes, an attempted defensive block falling kindly to Ollie Foulkes for a close-range finish.

Whilst both sides had chances there was no further score so, onwards then, to the next league fixture, on 4th November, when Woking welcome third placed Southend United to the MTPC.

Woking: Aaron Sings, Louie Taylor-Boyle (Reagan Oloo-Omee 90+4), Ed Scott ©, Sonnie Leedham, Jack Samuels (Joe Frawley 46); George Mattingley, Will Ledbury; Jack Tricker (Minkah Okojie 88), Will Richards (Timothy Frances 69), Nick Alves, Jalil Page (Joe Callow 83).

Goals: Tricker 14, 30.

Thursday 22nd October

Woking U17 2 – 2 Walton & Hersham: Allied Counties Youth League – East Division

Knaphill FC, Redding Way

A hard-fought game, in the rain, which brought an end to Woking’s 100% start to the Allied Counties league season.

With the conditions at least partially responsible for the difficulty in playing good, passing football Woking overcame an early set back but could not see out the victory.

Woking were the architects of their own early downfall, indecisive defending conceding a second minute corner which looked like it bounced straight in without the touch of the forward who was blocking the Cards’ keeper.

Woking set to putting things right, and on eight minutes their good, forward pressure won a corner. Aaryan Malhotra’s delivery was difficult to defend and when the ball bounced down off the back of Zane Taylor’s head Harrison Hunt reacted quickly to pass the ball into the net from eight yards.

They could have fallen behind again, another corner scrappily conceded, and this one hit the face of the crossbar. Hunt’s ankle was then on the receiving end of a tackle which earnt a booking, and would soon force him off, but not before Woking had the lead.

On 18 minutes Sad Kaloga’s crisp pass from left full back found Theo Hornbuckle in central midfield, who turned with the ball to beat his marker and played a great pass through to Luca Chevallier on the edge of the area, and he took one touch to set himself before powering a left foot drive past the advancing keeper.

Lucas Montague did have to make one good save but the game soon became a case of many ‘what might have been’s, with both sides failing to make the most of chances, and the work of Zane Taylor, who ran the length of the pitch, after an attack broke down, in order to make a goal-saving challenge, more typical of the qualities on show.

Woking came close to a third on the brink of the break, but the angle of shot Chevallier required to beat the ‘keeper also took the ball wide of the post.

Half-time: Woking 2 – 1 Walton & Hersham

With the rain getting heavier, and my gratitude for a roof greater, clear chances were hard to come by, with Montague making the first good save of the half on 56 minutes.

Woking thought they had a penalty on 61 minutes until the referee’s assistant reported that the keeper had got a hand on the ball, and Oliver Kumbaro, who had made an excellent run with the ball, was left to reflect on what might have been if he had passed to a well-positioned teammate rather than trying to dribble around the keeper himself.

The turnaround in fortunes was complete on 67 minutes, Woking conceding a penalty and Mateusz Milkowski hitting a low, hard drive quicker than Montague could dive to his left.

Woking tried a number of personnel and positional changes, but to no avail. Indeed, they were lucky to get away with clearing a goalmouth scramble on 72 minutes.

As the game drew to a close Walton’s goalkeeper did give Woking hope with a bad misjudgement of a catch, but of course, the next time he was targeted, his catch was as clean as a whistle.

There was still a need for some more sound defending from Jack Donkin, but with no further alarms for either custodian both sides had to settle for a point.

Woking: Lucas Montague, Harry Cummings (Keegan Berry 68), Zane Taylor ©, Harrison Hunt (Jack Donkin 38), Sad Kaloga; Aaryan Malhotra, Theo Hornbuckle; Yaw Akowuah-Addo, Oliver Kumbaro (Max Canham 74), Rayaan Ali-Wahid (Harley Adams 63), Luca Chevallier. Unused substitute: Hugo Shaw (GK).

Goals: Hunt 8, Chevallier 18.
